I was given a copy of this book as a gift because as a tween I was very into the original...like a Team Edward poster level of embarrassingly into the original.

I'm not entirely sure if it's because I am no longer a tween or the changes to this book were just not as exciting, but I feel very ambivalent about this book. I'm not entirely sure what Meyer was hoping to accomplish by doing the gender swap. I think that I read somewhere that she wanted to prove the story worked both ways, but I don't think I buy that argument. I mean if the dynamics worked with the genders swapped why did the premise of the sequels have to change?

Also, and I say this fully willing to admit that the first Twilight book is flawed but the characters in this version felt flat. Many of the plot points were the same, but I wasn't as invested in Edythe or Beau at all. Again, I understand I aged and the characters did not, but it was just not as engaging of a story as the original. Even the side characters felt flat and rushed and the plot twist with Archie was wild and not well set up. In many ways, I felt that this version played more into established binary gender stereotypes than the first.

I gave this book a 2 because I read the whole thing. Sure it took about 10 months to complete, but I did read the whole thing. At some point, it was a bit of a sunk cost fallacy because I had read too much not to finish, but I did get there in the end.

I think for the first half of the novel, I really enjoyed the swapped gender and it felt like a dynamic careful shift, but as the pace picked up, it got sort of more formulaic and unbelievable (well…more unbelievable). I thought that the end where
they let the venom run its course was a really interesting way to contain the story and rule out sequels. It did make it slightly more melancholic though in terms of the impact on Charlie and Renee. I maybe would have rather seen that play out as an alternative end to the original Twilight.

It’s still a really flawed mythology, but I really love that world and the possibilities of the characters. I seriously hope there are more novels to follow (but no more Midnight Sun, if’n ya please)

I think i prefered this book over the first twilight… I really liked the characters. Edythe was similar to Edward but no quite just like Beau vs Bella
I also liked how Archie’s visions were better explained. Some things were better written.
It didn’t deserve a five star because it is still twilight so it is still cringe but oh well. Meyer did a really good job. She made her point : it a story about a human and a vampire, not a girl and a vampire.
and the end… wow. Following Beau through is transformation was really different. It was beautiful how Meyer mixed love, sadness and grief. I felt so sad for Beau during his funeral but at the same time so happy that they have found themselves for “eternity”.
I kinda wish there were more books following this storyline.

Even though I loved Twilight, this book just wasn’t as good.

I didn’t care about any of the characters that much. Bella was relatable, but Beau was kind of boring. I felt that some of the characters didn’t really fit as the opposite gender.

Also, the plot changes to the end of the story made me not like it as much. I’m glad that the original story played out differently. I felt bad for Charlie and Rene for how the story ended.

Overall, it was just okay. I don’t think this story was necessary or that it added any value to the world of Twilight.
