Keith Haring: The Boy Who Just Kept Drawing by Kay Haring

Keith Haring was a kind and generous soul who thought art was for everyone and belonged everywhere for people to enjoy, not just hanging up in expensive art galleries. His art was worth a lot of money, but often he gave his work away or donated the money to charity because he just wanted to keep drawing; he never did it for the money. Sadly, Keith died young at the age of 31 of complications from AIDS, but his legacy lives on today in his familiar, accessible, and beloved artwork.

I've seen Keith Harring artwork since I was a kid, but I never knew anything about him. I thought this book did a nice job of giving an overview of his life, artwork, and his commitment to community with illustrations created in inspiration from Harring's work. The final two spreads give some detail about why this book was written from Kay Harring, sister and author, and a little more biographical detail about Keith's life. Overall I thought it was an inspiring read about an artist, his art, and how he worked to share his art with everyone.

2018 Bluebonnet.
Biographical look at the life and art of Keith Haring. Nice look at an artist who believes art is good for everyone and how he makes art accessible to as many people as possible.

Keith Haring's artwork is recognizable to many, but it's the story behind the artwork and the artist that will stick with me for a long time.

Fabulous picture book biography written by the artist's own sister. I appreciated the messages throughout of the dedication in his life toward service work for others and access to art for all. The repetition of "...he just kept drawing" provided a nice flow to the story. Wonderful back matter with an author's note with family pictures from childhood, more information about Keith Haring's life, and details about the art that appears in the book. Would make a great #classroombookaday read aloud.

What a wonderful book to tell the story of Keith Haring to kids! Not only do I love the way it's written, but I'm really taken with the illustrations...they compliment the story perfectly. Including so many of Haring's actual artwork is a wonderful plus. I've read this book over and over since it first came out, I really enjoy it. And there's so much to learn about the person that Keith Haring was. At the end there are four pages of author's notes, information about Haring, and photos of Keith and his siblings, the kind of additional information that will satisfy adult readers!

Biography of the artist who drew constantly, went to art school then to New York City and became famous as a graffiti artist; sold his art but also gave it away, started a foundation to raise money for AIDS/HIV education and underserved youth. Died of AIDS-related causes at age 31. Nice art in the book, incorporating Keith's actual art into the drawings, and identifying them at the back of the book.
