3.5/5, I almost preferred the film. took awhile to get into it, and I'm not a SatS fan. I appreciate The Group more, because of historical reasons, but this isn't my preferred literary genre

I just could not get into this book - too many characters to follow and the writing style felt too formal

This book tells the story of a group of 1930s Vassar graduates as they make their way in a new world of career girls and contraception, whilst grappling with the age old problems of marriage, men and money. The book is modern in its discussion of sex and psychology, but simultaneously extremely dated. It suffers from - and I normally hate this criticism - a lack of likeable characters, with no incentive to read on in a book with no real plot, no character development and a lack of beautiful writing. 1.5 I think.

It has been a long long time since I've been so compelled to immediately re-read the last few pages of a book. A devastating denouement and exposé of a key character which immediately cohered the entire novel. God, it was SO GOOD.

Having a highly intelligent and wily character like Lakey re-emerge in the final act to absolutely annihilate the reader's view of Harald feels like McCarthy's late-stage intervention to protect Kay. The irony comes in waves - this unravelling comes far too late; it should have been Kay's view of Harald being annihilated; Kay and Lakey could have circumvented the whole sorry mess and gone off together in the first place. Truly incomparable writing that simultaneously breaks your heart, makes you gasp and fills you with righteous anger.
