Yes, I’m a Christian reading a Hanukkah book as a bedtime story to my five-month-old in February. I do what I want.
This really was delightful, though, and I particularly loved the artwork. ❤️

The All-of-a-Kind Family is busy making latkes for the first night of Hanukkah. Gertie wants so very badly to help, but she is too little. Later, she gets a special job of her very own.

I loved Gertie, the main character. Kids will definitely relate to her. Both the illustrations and the story were beautiful.

I absolutely adored this book. I was disappointed that several people gave it low ratings. As someone who was raised with some of the food and traditions in this book, it warmed my soul that it could shared with young people.

A gorgeous holiday tale in and of itself, but what I loved best was the notes at the end of the story that connected me to the story's rich background. This is a book that, like the series that inspired it, can transcend culture and connect with people of all backgrounds. The illustrations are equally gorgeous and so thoughtfully cater to the perspective of the story's 4 year old protagonist. Highly reccomend!

This captured the feel of the original books so well! Now I want to go and re-read them.

I adored the All-of-a-Kind Family books growing up. I also completely understand why there seemed to be no surprise when this one a Sydney Taylor Award at the recent ALA YMA's, as it continued her legacy. I don't understand how some can criticize the depiction of the mother in the book; imagine what it's like to be preparing for a major holiday with five daughters twelve and under; I was very harried at times like this with just two children!
My favorite illustration is the one with Gertie stomping her feet, and the expressions on her sisters. I also greatly appreciated the explanations and references in the back of the book.

This is a lovely picture book about a much-loved series for kids that was written almost 70 years ago. Sweet story, telling of Hanukkah traditions, a large Jewish family at the turn of the 20th century, and particularly the making of latkes. Not super crazy about the illustrations, for some reason....
