I read this book back in 1992-1993 before my sister Mary got me hooked on PCornwell (and I got her hooked on KReichs in "revenge" ;> ) and remember kinda liking it but thinking the cover was WAY COOL...

Re-read it just now... didn't like the book as much; still admire the cover :>

The cover blurb makes it seem like the story revolves around the murder of Jerry Dwyer, but it's more about Smokey's relationships with her co-workers and cop friends (esp Joe L Sanders & the cute CHP...) and her friend Patricia with no taste/sense in men.
