A dog who is also a detective, or well, Nell sure loves detecting, she loves finding out where stuff are.

She does a swell job in this one as well when books are stolen from the kids. I love the build-up to the theft (we really learn all about Nell), and then to who the thief is. Sadly....

I found the whodunnit annoying and eh. If he wanted to borrow the books why not ask? And who doesn't know about libraries in these days? I can imagine back when they were new and mostly not well-stocked, but these days?

The ending was cute (when we went back to Nell and the classroom), I was happy with how it ended. Nell was really cute, and I can imagine she is really loved with the kids. It does surprise me that dogs are allowed in the classroom. Generally pets aren't allowed due to kids having allergies, but apparently in this book Nell is more than welcome!

The art was definitely the best part of the book. The illustrations are rich, colourful, and full of little details (like the pizza hut were the logo was eating a slice of his own body). I loved how the characters, and especially Nell, were drawn.

Would I recommend this book? Yes, it is cute, the art is lovely, it is just a shame about the whodunnit.

Cute book about a dog with a nose and how great having a library card is but the librarian in me had a hard time getting past a dog (with out any indication it is a service dog) picking up a library book with its mouth. :) Still a cute book.

If your child is the kind that keeps rereading the same books, do yourself a favor and get this one. It's lovely!

Julia Donaldson books are a perennial favourite and I think this new one will quickly be on the list of must haves. Peter's dog Nell has a keen sense of smell and she is out solving crime all of the time!
Mondays are a special day for Peter and Nell, they go to school and Nell listens to the children read but one Monday when they arrive at school all the books have been stolen! Detective dog Nell is on the case!
This is a fast paced story celebrating the amazing sense smell dogs have and the joy of books - how could I not like it?

The pictures are fun and full of energy - there is a lot going on in the background - and the text is wonderfully full of rhythm and rhymes. The whole book is just joyful.

In this rhyming picture book, detective dog Nell loves finding things and reading with children. When the books go missing, she finds the thief and show him that he can get books from the library instead.

There are some Julia Donaldson books that don't work for me (Highway Rat being a good example) but this one does. It's nice to see a fresh illustrator take on Donaldson's work and I think Sara Ogilvie is fantastic. The expressions, movement and graceful shape of the protagonist: Nell the dog.

The story celebrates our passion for reading and all the joys that books bring. When the school's library simply vanishes overnight, it is up to Nell to sniff out the perpetrator. The rhyming helps jolly along the story but it is the message of the importance of literature and libraries is an excellent one.

5yo wanted to read it immediately. It's a fun story, with a good ending and all the rhythmic language you've come to expect from Julia Donaldson.
