This is my first book that I’ve read in the series. I don’t know if my enjoyment of it was marred by the fact I’m hopping halfway into an established series though I don’t think it should as any background notes were addressed. This was a solid crime book but for some reason I kept losing interest and track. It changed direction quite quickly and randomly I thought, including when Jo suddenly appeared safe & sound out of nowhere. Still don’t really get the connections between the case in Northumbria and bringing down a plane. I think it was a good premise but in the end I was speed reading to finish and felt underwhelmed.

Having seen all kinds of human misery, the loss of over three hundred people, including her beloved soul mate Jo Soulsby in a Trans-Atlantic air disaster, is her most devastating case to date. With no official jurisdiction, Kate doesn’t hesitate to ingratiate herself with officials at Heathrow airport, in order to help with the investigation as to why the plane went down. With her DS, Hank Gormley, by her side and with DCS Bright’s final approval, they become part of an undercover unit to discover just how a plane exploded mid-air.
I’m not sure Kate and Hank or even Northumbria CID, would be allowed in real life to ride rough shod over the hierarchies in airport security but it made for an entertaining thriller to see her throwing her weight around, especially as she won’t accept Jo is dead.
Kate has developed a real thirst for policing, never turning a challenge away that presented itself, whether a mental task or a physical confrontation, always able to handle herself. Keeping secrets is also something she excels at, be it personal or professional and it’s this unique case that tests all these traits, to be able to successfully go undercover. Her determination and tenacity has made her the successful DCI she is today and a fantastic fictional police officer to follow through a series. However, I did feel like the majority of this book was a huge deviation from the normal style of cases and almost felt like an interlude with it focusing so much on the missing Jo. But the conclusion to the case brings the characters back into full control and was very satisfying for me to read.
All in all, another excellent addition to the series and I am looking forward to book eight, “Her Last Request”.

Upon learning that this is a series, I can imagine they all follow the same format: Kate comes up with an unrealistically wild theory that has absolutely no evidence to support it, everyone around her tells her to drop it, she decides to break every single police rule to prove herself right and it turns out that her wild theory with no evidence is right because ???? I understand how these police procedural books work but I was disappointed when she found Jo alive (after frankly an unhinged goosechase based on almost nothing) I just think it would have been more interesting for Kate to have to deal with not finding Jo and still having to go back and do her work. But I imagine Jo is needed for the next book so can’t be killed. I don’t know if this was just my copy, but there were also loads of errors in it, plurals in the wrong place, an extra word in a sentence where it shouldn’t be. Take for example “ words of comfort from her supervision” when it should say supervisor. I’ve never read a book with so many textual errors. Felt the ending was rushed and that the perpetrator was plucked out of thin air. Engaging, but not great.

Wanneer vlucht 0113 van Londen naar New York plotseling van de radar verdwijnt, wordt er direct een internationaal crisisteam opgericht en is er zeer veel aandacht voor deze zaak. Rechercheur Kate Daniels heeft officieel geen dienst en ze heeft geen enkel gezag in Londen, maar ze haalt brigadier Hank Gormley over om halsoverkop naar het crisisbureau te vertrekken. Ze wil zich toegang tot het onderzoek verschaffen, want deze zaak is persoonlijk: Jo Soulsby, de profiler uit haar team en haar geliefde, bevond zich in dit vliegtuig en Kate móét weten wat er precies is gebeurd.
Ze kan niet naar huis voordat ze Jo heeft gevonden, dood of levend. Het is zeer onwaarschijnlijk, maar Kate weigert te geloven dat Jo echt aan boord is gegaan, dat ze echt is omgekomen. Ze klampt zich vast aan elke strohalm en blijft geloven in het onmogelijke, ze zet niet alleen haar eigen carrière maar ook die van anderen op het spel en ze bijt zich vast in haar eigen onderzoek. Waar zal dit toe leiden?
Je leert Kate kennen als een volhardende, doelgerichte, ambitieuze, dappere, koppige rechercheur die haar werk voor alles laat gaan, die er niet voor terugdeinst om haar bevoegdheden wat op te rekken en moeite heeft met het opvolgen van aanwijzingen en bevelen van hogerhand. Toch heeft ze ook een kwetsbare kant, een kant die ze niet gemakkelijk laat zien maar die in dit boek duidelijk naar voren komt. Haar karakter wordt goed uitgewerkt en haar relaties met de andere personages worden kort geschetst, al had ik graag iets meer achtergrondinformatie gekregen om die relaties en het ontstaan daarvan echt goed te begrijpen. Dit verhaal is prima als standalone te lezen, maar het is wel het 7e deel in de serie en daardoor mis je soms wat introductie.
Hoewel de zoektocht naar Jo zeker interessant is, komt het verhaal na een krachtig begin wat traag op gang. Het onderzoek is lastig, het duurt lang om benodigde informatie te krijgen en door gedetailleerde beschrijvingen zakt ontstane spanning al snel weer weg. Kate wordt vooral gedreven door (wan)hoop in plaats van door bewijs, waardoor haar onderzoek wat chaotisch aanvoelt, ze af en toe verzandt in bijzaken en het soms lastig is om de rode draad te blijven volgen.
In de tweede helft van het boek wordt het tempo opgevoerd, piekt de spanning vaker, worden er connecties met het verleden en met een andere belangrijke zaak gevonden, worden er grote risico’s genomen en volgen gevaarlijke ontwikkelingen elkaar op, terwijl de emoties binnen het team hoog oplopen. De uiteindelijke ontknoping vond ik ietwat vergezocht, maar er is duidelijk wel goed nagedacht over de plot en ik ben benieuwd geworden naar andere onderzoeken van Kate, vooral omdat ik haar als personage interessant vind!
