4.5⭐️ I read this years ago when it first came out and remembered enjoying it.
I finally reread it now and still really enjoyed it.
In a society where everything is predicted, no outbursts are allowed, everyone is calm and in peak health with optimal food intake and exercise, and when you turn 17 you are matched with the perfect person for optimal genetic outcome.
Cassia is smart and kind and is matched with her best friend Xander, while unusual to be matched to someone from your own province, it’s perfect for her. Best friends since they were young, they laugh together and truly enjoy each others company.
When cassia gets her data pod from her matching ceremony and looks at it at home, another boys face shows up, before Xander’s. And this leads her to ask questions, questions that she shouldn’t be asking.
Tw: death

It only got good after chapter 10. Even then it was slow going and hard to keep reading. I almost gave up but then something would happen that made me want to continue. It does have the love-triangle trope but that doesn’t start until chapter 6 and basically dissolves around chapter 20.

I'm only giving 3 stars for entertainment value, which may not be saying much because I listened to this while nothing was happening at work. Don't get me wrong, YA is both fun and not exactly widely recognized for the writing prowess of its authors (see also this quote from Matched: "Compact. It means 'small'. I am small.") But I once I got into the flow of this story that doesn't quite hold up to the test of time, I enjoyed myself. It's fun, it's pretty non-intimidating, and it's broad and even ridiculous enough in its critiques of both the real and fictional "society" that I could appreciate what it was going for without anything cutting too deep.
So, honestly, it was kind of perfect.

It's a good dystopian book. A clear bad guy that bends the line. Love, death, romance. Very well written, but the will they-wont they love triangle kind of kills it for me, it's simply not something I enjoy.
