I listened to this and the audio version was excellent. The novel interweaves music and character story lines. For the recording, they used different narrators for each storyline and had people playing the music as it was being described. It was beautifully done.

The story itself was fairytale-like, sweet with a comfortable understanding of good and bad and happily ever after. Sometimes, beautiful and not-challenging is exactly what you want from a book.

A beautiful mix of fairy tale and historical fiction! I teared up several times, and was moved by each character's story. If you love music for its ability to unite people in hope, move hearts, and change minds, you will love this story.

Brilliant. I couldn't stop reading this. Pam Munoz Ryan ties several seemingly unrelated stories together with the finesse of Barbara Kingsolver's The Prodigal Summer. I closed the book with a contented smile.

I really enjoyed this book and the stories in it. The book is very well-written. I liked the design of the book too.

Okay, so...I don’t know how I feel about this? I’m not going to be giving it a rating because it was a schoolbook, but it feels like it would probably be around 3.5 stars?

I think, mostly, I was disappointed that the premise of the book at the very beginning was SO vastly different from the actual story. I was trying really hard to find the same whimsy and music in the rest of the book as was carried in the actual story...but I just didn’t feel it. The characters were fine, and this is 100% a personal thing—this book is good, and clean, and I think I’d give it to my little sisters with 0 reservations. But...personally, to me, it did not quite fly.

Oh well. :(

the only word I could think of is "magical"

This was an enchanted tale, absolutely magical! The only problem I have with this book is the way it was classified. Because it is supposed to be a "middle grade" or "young adult" book I'm afraid many adults won't even pick it up. There in lies the tragedy.

Very well-done audiobook. The stories pulled me in and I really cared about the characters. It might have been written for children, but it's a powerful story for adults as well.
