I have this scout stars because the setting is very good. Plots are fun! They make you think a bit!

I first met The Amazing Conroy and Reggie in Buffalito Destiny, and I was instantly taken by the interplanetarily stranded hypnotist turned entrepreneur and his cuddly slobbering pooch who can happily chomp through an aircraft carrier. Schoen has a knack for creating intriguing characters, (his laidback protagonist reminds me of Roger Zelazny's heroes) and head scratching scenarios. Here the conflict centers on two warring alien races, the needlessly grumpy Svenkalli and the "hive mind" Uary, (sort of a less menacing Borg from Star Trek). For reasons that were never quite clear to me, the Uary want to access the mind of a long dead Mayan priest, (which is why they need Conroy) and the Svenkali want to obliterate the Uary. Many clever thrills and spills, but I kept wishing Reggie were around more to chew through stuff.
