Kissing Mr. Wrong by Kerri Carpenter

This book had too little of everything. Too little character development, too little story building, too little plot, and too little respect for readers. The writing was decent, but there needed to be more. It felt rushed and, at just barely over 100 pages, there really isn't any excuse for not making more of an effort. Add another 100+ pages, more back story to the main characters, and maybe I would care more about what is happening, or has happened, in everyone's lives. As it stands, the sexual tension wasn't hot enough to make up for the lack of substance.

Thanks to Entangled and Netgalley for the book in exchange for a honest review.

After a bad day Vanessa went to the bar that is below her apartment to drown her sorrows in some drinks. While she was there she noticed a nice looking guy sitting at the end of the bar but with all she was going through just ignored it. After talking to the bartender/owner of the bar about working there she leaves. Good looking guy finds her and after a little bit of time they end up back at her apartment. They agree that this is a one off, he isn't staying and she's fine with breaking out of her box for one night. In the light of day she's glad she had this chance and sad at the same time because it was the best sex of her life. Life moves on but she keeps thinking about him.

Coming back stateside after being in Afghanistan, he went home to visit his sister but she wasn't home. He went to a local bar where he saw the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen, and he had the best one night stand ever. He STILL fantasizes about it, three months later. Now he's back to help plan his sisters engagement party, and he hopes to run in to Vanessa again. Take her to dinner and have a real date. When he sees her again all of that attraction is still there, but she soon realizes that he's her best friends brother, the one she swore she wouldn't crush on.

I really enjoyed this book. It was simple and easy to read. It was a complicated situation but it was too hard to understand. I thought that Jess was way dramatic and a tad childish about John and Vanessa together. It was a long way around but in the end love won out. I don't want to give away too much since this is a novella, its a short book. Sweet story and I'd love to read more by this author.

Very short, sweet read. Nothing complicated but still well written. Nice palette cleanser before starting on a longer, deeper book.

While I enjoyed the story, I feel like there was something missing.

Who doesn’t love a tortured hero? This girl absolutely does, and when that hero is a soldier, the stakes are higher and I’m instantly intrigued. I loved John! His hero instincts kick right in when he sees Vanessa in distress the night they meet and saves her from what he thinks might be the ultimate in wrong decisions. In reality she just needs air and space, but it made for the most adorable meet-cute, with a little drama and tension thrown in for good measure. I swooned when he saved her from falling over the edge and was hooked for the rest of the story.

I love the best-friend-falls-for-the-sibling trope, and this one was so well done, with Vanessa spilling all the dirty details of her night of passion with her best friend, only to find out later that he is actually her brother. I did have a little bit of a hard time believing that she would have had as big of a problem with the relationship as John and Vanessa think she will, but ultimately it played out well and was a satisfying plot twist.

This was a really entertaining novella, with some really steamy scenes and some really sweet ones as well. It’s short, sweet, and really engaging. It’s fun on so many levels, but there’s also a depth to the narrative, with two broken people coming together to find love. I highly recommend it.

This book was just a mini romance in that it was a one night stand and then some time later he turns out to be her bff’s brother. Since it’s such a short book it was super quick pace in that every issue was solved like three seconds later. I did really enjoy the characters though!

Kissing Mr. Wrong by Kerri Carpenter was more of a novella than a novel. The writing was good. There were no errors. I loved the cover too. I wasn’t sure about the title though. There were not many mentions made in the book about John being “Mr. Wrong” so the title didn’t seem to fit too much.

I liked Vanessa and John very much. However, I did not like Jess, Vanessa’s friend, very much at first but I did get over that.

Even though this was a short story and there were some things that I didn’t like about this story (things I can’t get into without giving too much of the story away), I still felt this was a sweet story.

Vanessa has a horrible day that ends on a spectacular note. She loses her job, goes to her local pub, meets super hot guy and then while hanging out at her local bridge, ruminating about life...as you do… almost falls. Hot guy saves her and well, hot sex soon follows. It’s just a one night stand. Until he comes back, and she finds out that he’s her BFF’s brother, John Campbell. It’s a bit awkward. But, romance still happens.

The Good, The Bad and Everything In Between

-The fantasy one night stand: The one night stand with the super hot military guy who’s completely into you, even three months after the hook up is pretty much what fantastical romances are made of.

-Good chemistry between Vanessa and John: Their sex scenes hit just the right note - sexy, hot with just enough description.

-Easy on the wallet: 99 pennies isn’t bad and at about 120 pages, not a huge time investment. Perfect summer reading material.

-Get ready to suspend disbelief: With this type of page count, there’s simply not enough time to delve into the motivations of the characters. Their connection is magically deep and fairly quick, though I appreciated their storeroom scenes, because it gave some depth to their feelings. The obstacle of his sister/her BFF was dealt with quickly and V’s history with her mother was resolved with little fanfare. There’s no delving into, simply skimming along the surface, enjoying the ride. It’s alright, as long as you know that’s what you’re getting.

The Bottom Line
I enjoyed it. It was a great quick, easy read for my holiday weekend. I’d recommend for those wanting a sweet, low angsty romance that's doesn't require alot of attention.

Vanessa has an incredible night with a man she is sure she will never see again; until she does.

This is a definite connection at first sight book. Not as steamy as I would have thought.

An easy read, a short book with a plot I figured out really quick. I wish it was a little longer and more time was spent getting to know Vanessa and John better.

I was a good read and I would look for other books by this author.

I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest review.
