To be in middle school is hard. To be in middle school in a country you don't talk the language, look like others or "home" is a tricky subject... well that can drive you mad. This book puts the challenges of being from the different parts of Latin America in a US school into a beautiful story, with so many of the specific charaterisics that can mark the experience. I absolutle love that we can have this type of books and stories available for everyone.
Ser de Latinoamérica es un regalo, y compartir nuestra cultura es un derecho.

I bought this book for a fundraiser charity thing at my work, but no one picked the books up that I ordered. So, I read it, and will give to my niece. I didn't really read the synopsis of the book. When I started reading it, I thought the book was going another way and that somehow it would be about a food fight in the cafeteria. What we got was something so different and so beautiful. Most of these kids do not have much, or have lost a lot, or dealing with their own issues. So, what they do is amazing, and shows that kids and humans can do and just be kind. I'm so happy I read this book, and I feel everyone should read it. Plus, I love that the book is in Spanish and English. Good teaching tool for Spanish speakers learning English and vice versa.

This was a fun story, but it could have used more time to develop the characters or a bit more focus. There was so much about these characters to dig into, but the author seemed to rush from one scene to another when they could have really made the characters shine. I liked what I had, but it left me wanting more.
