This is a hard one for me to rate, because I loved the hero (Drake) so much, but hated the heroine (Bella). I nearly dnf in the first 20% because Bella was just such a vapid moron that I couldn't stand it - she was the epitome of the poor little rich girl, and her parents were so obviously sabotaging her that a toddler would realize it. But of course, Bella doesn't, and so this book is a convoluted plan to help the spineless, brainless twat keep the zillions of dollars Grandpa wanted her to have.

Oy.

See, especially in the world we live in right now, I don't want to see some young, spoiled, incapable moron inherit her grandfather's rich oil company and land, and then moan about her mother trying to get her to sell it ... and cry that she just can't deal with this burden over and over. I don't want to see an awesome dude like Drake bend over backwards to help pull her head out of her ass and grow a backbone so people stop walking all over her and let her live a charmed life.

But that's what this book is.

I think it would have been better served by dialing down her whining and mama drama, and putting the conflict with Jupiter/Avery Briar into a more prominent place in the story ... because that's the more interesting plot but it is treated as very secondary, and then wrapped in a neat bow.

Further, her parents had such a dramatic personality swing that it read like retconning. Look.
SpoilerYou can't begin a book by laying out in very clear fashion that her parents are sabotaging her real estate business - literally, by pushing her to use their "friends" for work, and then backing those friends as they rip Bella off - and then at the 60% mark tell me that they really love her dearly and just can't express it. What they were doing to Bella in this book wasn't awkward neglect. They smashed her confidence by smashing her business. Then they came stomping into her home and dragging a shark of a businessman (Avery Briar) to browbeat Bella into selling Grandpa's company to him. Her mom threw a literal fit when Bella refused to sell. And later, when Bella continued to refuse - and tore up the contract - Drake had to stop her mom from belting Bella. So no. I am just flat-out not going to buy that her mom just didn't know how to express love because of her shitty childhood. Nor am I going to buy that her puppet dad - pretty much mute, unless mom indicates she wants him to back her - is really some mastermind that also loves her. If that's where you're going with the story, authors, here's a tip: don't open your book by laying out in meticulous fashion the way these parents are tanking their daughter's career and confidence.

This book gets 5 stars for Drake and Edison, and 1 star for Bella and her parents. So I'm giving it 3 as a final rating.

Drake and Bella Larkin

Annabelle (Bella) Reed is a 24 year old heiress of her grandfather’s e tire estate, including his oil company.
Drake Larkin was stage hired help, body guard and trusted friend of Jonah Reed, Bella’s late grandfather.
It only take Bella a few days to realize that per her grandfathers will she was proxy married to the handsome stranger who helped her grandfather until she died. It takes awhile to fully understand her grandfathers reasonings, why she was in so. I have danger and why Drake Larkin is exactly what she needs to keep her safe but also set her free. Drake truly becomes her knight in more ways than one.
Beautiful story.

Sweet

This is that kind of sweet, contemporary that has just the right edge of danger and appeal. Sad circumstances being two lost souls together, guided by the kind hearted machinations of a brilliant and well loved old man who passed on. It’s heart warming, a bit raunchy and perfectly imperfect.

Pros:
- Sweet.
- The formula works.
- Not everyone is quite what they appear.
- Small town appeal.
- Edison.

Cons:
- Formulaic.
- Would like more details with Angie and the lawyer.
- Company finale is not explained very well, at least per the plot set up.

meh

this was a bog standard romance. girl gets inheritance from grandfather, money grubbing mom is pissed off that she gets nothing. girl enters into fake marriage to be able to keep said inheritance.

this was fine. it wasn't anything particularly special or magical. i thought the smutty scenes were kind of lacking... not in description or anything just in general steam and excitement. i thought the author did a decent job trying to get the reader to care about the characters but they still didn't grab my attention much.

i think what made this especially lackluster was the build up of tension between the main character and her mother was sort of never addressed at the end. like the mom has some epiphany and stops treating her kid like shit. and while the sentiment is nice, i can't see that really happening irl. i wish there had been a true confrontation so we could see our main character buck up a little bit.

this is one where if the synopsis sounds like it'll interest you, go for it. it's certainly not a bad read. and i'm glad i picked it up because i see this author plastered across my Kindle Unlimited all the time. but it didn't really entice me to read more from her.

What a good story!

I really liked the storyline and characters! The story was consistent and flowed. I loved how Gramps left post its every where injecting a little bit of sentimentality. Main characters grew to love each other and you felt the hive and take of getting to know one another. Good book! I would recommend!

Loved both Bella and Drake. Edison was very entertaining as well. Loved the intrigue bit and that there was some redemption for characters.
