The first two hundred pages were so hard to get through, super boring. Then the plot picked up but the overall ending was just meh. I absolutely hated the death, that was my favourite character. Overall, just super disappointed in this series, I had such high hopes too.

“How much love people have denied themselves through the ages because they believed they didn't deserve it. As if the waste of love is not the greater tragedy.” (P. 195)

Too excited are two words that didn't even come close to how I felt about reading this book. A part of me refused to read it because I didn't want to finish this story. The first few chapters felt a bit slow compared to the previous two books, but as always with Clare I was hooked, so this wasn't a big problem when it came to reading. I loved the rest of the book so much, it's a perfect and beautiful ending to the story, the only thing that would change him is to know more about Matthew's life.

In short, the book felt pretty flat most of the time, or at least the first 400 pages, despite exciting or emotional situations happening, but I didn't feel that need to keep reading that happened to me with the two previous books. After half it became much more interesting, and I couldn't stop reading anymore; I really liked how everything developed, even the tragic parts. I was very happy with the outcome, although I feel that of the three books this was the one that was least up to scratch.

i will preface this review by saying that i think i would’ve enjoyed this a lot more if i’d reread the first two books. i would highly recommend you reread Chain of Gold and Chain of Iron before reading this!!
i found Chain of Thorns to be a bit slow and dragging, the plot was confusing and i know that’s because the characters don’t really know what’s going on but it just left me not knowing what was happening, so i was only invested in the romances, not the actual fantasy plotline with Belial and everything.
half the characters were very frustrating and half were wonderful.
so it was a mixed experience.

like i said above, i should’ve reread the first two books (and potentially the infernal devices as well) however i simply could not be bothered and i also was very excited to read this. there were just too many things i didn’t remember and while i could infer well enough it still would’ve been nice to understand more and also be more invested in the story and characters. i also read it in random chunks across about a week and i think that negatively impacted my reading experience too.

I overall really enjoyed this book! Definitely has the typical Cassie style, though I will say this book was particularly romance-focused (which isn’t a bad thing for me!). I love the romance—particularly all the pairings in this story—but I would have liked to see more demon battles.
I also found the end a little predictable, with James stabbing himself with Cortana and Cordelia healing him immediately after. Because of that, I didn’t really feel the magnitude of tension that I would have expected to feel for a final battle.
Overall though, I think Cassie did a great job developing some of the couples that I was DYING to get more content of (Thomas and Alastair my beloveds, plus Anna and Ari). I also think Grace’s story was handled well—I think the reactions to the truth of her and James’ “relationship” were realistic for each character. God I just love these characters so much, Cassie has such a way of making us fall in love with her characters.
