What an exciting idea for a book format! This book was released as a serial, much like a TV series. A new episode was released every week, all have now been released so you can read the whole story on the Serial Box website. I really wanted to like this. I did. I've been loving two of the other serials produced through SerialBox (Tremontaine and Witch Who Came in from the Cold), and was looking for something to tide me over now that I'm caught up on Witch Who, and have to wait a week between episodes. This... was not what I was looking for.

I'm not sure what it is that doesn't work for me. When I read the prose, it just felt rather blah and meh, like there was a skeletal framework but not enough meat on it. I tried the audio version, in the hopes that a good narrator could make the story come alive for me. Maybe there is such a narrator out there, but the narrator chosen to do this one actually made me cringe, and made me even less interested in the story.

Given that Gladstone himself wrote the pilot, and I've really enjoyed his godpunk series and the work he's done on Witch Who, I'm rather disappointed by this. Possibly it gets better later on, but without hard, solid evidence of that, I am unwilling to pay for the rest of the season.*

*for all of Serialbox's serials, the first episode is available for free.

Šo palaimējās dabūt uz Kindle bezmaksas, bet pārējās daļas pat netaisos meklēt. Bija daži forši maģijas knifiņi, bet nekas no tēliem vai notikumiem nespēja mani aizraut.

The story was interesting albeit a little choppy. it would have benefited from a thorough editing. the book was amazingly short, I finished it faster than I expected.

I received a free pdf copy from netgalley for my review.

Fun story in the style of a TV Series (as the Serial Box website says).

A group of Vatican archivists fights to keep monsters from coming into our world through books. Sally, a police officer, is our way of getting into the story when she gets pulled into their world.

I'm excited to see what a couple of the writers will do with the story ([a:Mur Lafferty|97284|Mur Lafferty|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1314461906p2/97284.jpg] and [a:Max Gladstone|3405346|Max Gladstone|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/m_50x66-82093808bca726cb3249a493fbd3bd0f.png]), but am still deciding if the price works for me.

A fun start, but I don't know that I'm in for 16 parts.

It's going to take awhile to get used to the serialized format but I like the story enough to give it a try.

We've got a basic urban fantasy set up - demons trying to break into our world, a main character who just learned magic exists. It's quick-paced, mostly action and little character building but it is the intro to the series. We get right into the action, but I'm sure we'll learn more about the characters as the story continues.

Sal is a great character. She's intelligent and loves her brother, faults and all - and that's what draws her into this world. You have to give her credit though, she's tough.

I like the serial set up. It's a short read, it kind of wraps up but leaves you wanting to see what happens in the next one. I will say that the descriptions and analogies are well done. It's an enjoyable read. I don't know that it's terribly original, but it's fun.
