Simple, effectively tense story.
Not knowing anything about baseball I was probably missing an extra layer that might have provided a deeper emotional connection to the book itself.

On a hiking trail in Maine, nine-year-old Trisha McFarland can no longer handle the sound of her brother and mother arguing. She leaves the trail, just for a second, just to pee and decides she'll take a short cut back. The short cut leads her deeper into the woods, where she becomes hopelessly lost and must fight for her survival. Not only against the elements but against a more sinister presence that is stalking her through the forest.

I've read this at least twice before and I think it still holds up as a really solid entry in Stephen King's bibliography, especially for a rare short book. I've said before that I think King shines when he tells stories of plucky kids who live against all odds. The supernatural element isn't even the most tense part of this book, it is that literally anything could kill a nine-year-old alone in the forest, especially a nine-year-old town girl who doesn't spend much time outdoors. Her survival through sheer determination, luck, and whatever else was an emotional ride.

This is the story of a 9 year old girl who becomes lost in the woods near the Appalachian trail. It isn't a horror novel. I found it to be more similar to survival stories in which character ls need to use their wits and available resources to survive.

Things I Liked:
  • I like that the MC was smart and made generally good decisions.
  • I liked the atmosphere and building tension. The forest itself almost felt like an antagonist.
  • I like that it ended when it did and wasn't super drawn out.

Things I didn't like:
  • I feel like not pursuing horror was a missed opportunity. There were a few things that happened that were unsettling but they didn't amount to much.
  • I didn't really care for the baseball aspect. I know it's right in the name but listening to the MC listening to a baseball game on her walkman wasn't super exciting for me.
  • I wish more happened. I don't think the climax had the payoff I wanted from this book.
