A friend told me about an Icelandic tradition that involves buying books as gifts for loved ones on Christmas Even and reading all night long. It sounded like heaven, so I looked it up and discovered this picture book in the process. The illustrations are gorgeous. My eyes kept going back to drink in all the details. The Christmas Book Flood centers around the magic of books and a love of reading. The Author's Note at the end provides an informative overview of where and how this tradition originated. I highly recommend checking this book out! Now I want to be in Iceland on December 24th every year :)

My wife and I have been celebrating Jólabókaflóðið for years and we found this audiobook so delightful, we ended up buying a copy of the picture book for our home library.

Whenever I think of the magic of the holidays, I always imagine a scene from a European town that would fit under a Christmas tree. That image combined with the tradition of the Christmas Book Flood in Iceland is enough to make me NOT be a Scrooge during the holiday season.

For those who don't know, Icelanders share a Christmas tradition known as the Book Flood where they spend Christmas Eve exchanging books and then reading all evening and eating chocolate.

This picture book is absolutely magical and makes me kind of bummed that I discovered it in January because I have to wait 11 months before I can share it with kids.

Set in the Icelandic tradition, this sweet book is all about winter, Christmas, and books! On December 24th, it is traditional to give that perfect book to your loved ones to read while waiting for Christmas, during Christmas, or after. Great for anyone who loves books.
