Was about to give this up after the scenes with Sally near the start, still find them incredibly bad taste and of no actual purpose to the narrative. That aside, and it takes a bit to put that aside, the rest of the narrative is good and there is real sense of awareness and research into the period. I do however find the characters less than believable so it was because of the siege and army material I persevered and in spite of the other material which I did not find at all necessary. I am being generous awarding three stars, be warned this his not a very palatable book at all.
