The inevitable problem with a collection such is this is balancing semi-to-well established writers, with people who were actually affected by the incident, and this collection leans towards the former. Frankly, I don't care that you were cutting your garden when you hear about the tsunami and then you felt sad *insert sarcastic single clap here* Nevertheless, the poems were wonderful, if occasionally inaccessibly esoteric, and ultimately made me want to write about an event that didn't influence my life in any significant way, which I'm including here, because you totally want to read my poetry. And maybe the fact that it made me want to write poetry says enough.
you don't remember a tsunami
and now you've been reminded,
again.
when it happened, it was bigger than you were
and now you know
and so many people died
a tragedy indeed
mostly inaccessible.
here is what you saw
eight years later
sri lanka, january 2015
a tragedy that may have been forgotten
marks on houses above your head
and in the sea, death.
the coral was ravaged by
senseless wave
and yet it still cuts you
and you swim away, bleeding a little
hoping it will heal fast.
