Goodbye Fran. Goodbye Jonathan as we knew him. Poor Alice.

Ouch. If you thought the last short (Broken Paper Hearts) hurts, get ready for The Star of New Mexico. This is the fourteenth short in Seanan McGuire's InCryptid series, and it tells the story of Jonathan and Frances Healy.

It's also an ending of sorts, so get ready for that. Fans of the series already knew that this story would have to end eventually and that it probably wasn't going to end on a happy note. After all, we're talking about the Healys/Prices. More than that, we're talking about their tales from a couple of generations ago.

Don't read this short story if you're not in the mood to cry. Because I promise you – you will cry. If you found yourself even remotely enjoying the adventures of these two quirky characters, then you'll feel the ending of their story very keenly here.

I don't know why it hit me so much, but I cried a lot throughout most of it. Especially with the Mouse Priest POV! Need to move past it!

For a review, I'll just leave what I put on the author's blog, because over a week later I still can't manage better than this:

I want to say something about how incredibly well-written the story was, how beautiful and everything, but I can't seem to get further than "The poor mice! Poor Johnathan! Poor Alice!" and then I start crying again.

how delightful !! ( not that it's all about a funeral, of course). I love the Incryptid series, this is a small stand-alone story in that universe, but it ties in to another series of Ms McGuire's, the Roadwitch series !! exciting !!
The story itself is beautifully crafted, a poignant goodbye for a beloved family member and friend. Short and sweet, memorable.
