A lot of political intrigue and political romance. I am annoyed with La Valliere and how fickle she is, despite how much she is claimed to be a beacon of virtue. This needs to pick up in the next book.

Che delusione. Dumas è forse il mio autore preferito e finora non avevo mai dato a un suo libro meno di quattro stelline. Mai mi sarei immaginata che ne avrei date solo tre a Il Visconte di Bragelonne, un libro teoricamente dedicato a D'Artagnan. Il problema alla fine è stato proprio questo: Il Visconte di Bragelonne non si può definire un libro dedicato a lui. Le avventure rocambolesche e i duelli spariti, eliminati per lasciare più spazio a insipidi intrighi di corte. Almeno D'Artagnan fosse stato il protagonista...invece mi sono trovata lui e gli altri in secondo piano, sacrificati per fare spazio alle vicende di una bambina confusa e ipocrita a corte (Luisa) e ai piani scialbi di Aramis che ho trovato cambiato in maniera un filo drastica. Nemmeno Raul è stato tanto presente quando mi sarei aspettata di vederlo protagonista.
L'unico episodio che rievoca un po' gli altri libri è quello della maschera di ferro e per me rimane la parte migliore del libro. La fine è piuttosto amara e di fatto per me D'Artagnan sarà sempre immortale.
Se avessi avuto aspettative diverse forse mi sarebbe piaciuto.

Listened on Librivox. (Out of order for this Vol III which is broken into 3, sometimes 4 parts). Story is good but meanders beyond the Musketeers more time these previous book.

Again, this was OK, but had alot of stuff I'm not sure why is in there. I'm starting to think that these books could just as well have been one volume, with as many pages as one of the books.
The language is of course beautiful, but again, it's so "flowery", it makes it much, much longer than it needed to be.
This book, I skimmed through much of it, as long periods didn't really have anything to say for the story. The next, I will probably be even more selective in what I choose to read thoroughly.

Louis XIV is well past the age where he should rule, but the ailing Cardinal Mazarin refuses to relinquish the reins of power.
