Set in 1899 Turkey, during the decline of the Ottoman empire, this is a moving tale of a family and of secrets. Elderly Iskander Pasha, a wealthy noble whose ancestor was exiled from Istanbul due to a personal offense toward the Sultan, now lives on an estate outside of the city. His grown children, as well as his brother, have come to visit, and the reader learns each of their individual stories, revealing a number of surprises along the way.

Beautifully written and touching, with this third book Ali's Islam Quintet has solidified its place as one of my favorite historical fiction series.
