Very inspiring, though a bit simple. This is, of course, due to its young adult status. Should I read the full version, I’m sure I’ll give it a higher ranking.

I highly recommend this teen version of this powerfully moving book on our broken criminal justice system. The narratives keep you reading and the statistics are daunting. The philosophical elements are humbling.

This book is essential reading. I wish I'd read the adult version, but the young adult version still packs a gut punch. Despite coming into this with a good bit of background knowledge, I was still completely and utterly blown away by what Stevenson had to say. I should warn you, though: you need to make sure you're in an okay headspace before starting because Stevenson takes you to some truly upsetting places. I didn't just cry in parts. I was either crying or on the verge for most of the book. His ability to humanize the law and its effects by giving everything a face and backstory is unparalleled. This book is as brilliant as it is brutal. An absolute must read.
