I think this book works best if you are already aware of the general history of Afghanistan. I'm not sure of it also, but given this book was completed not too long after the US withdrawal I'm guessing the author wanted to avoid their giving more a definitive analysis until more conclusive scholarship on the matter comes up.
I felt the book was a little disjointed between the many actors and analysis thin.
Again, maybe I'm not the best person to review this book since I went into it knowing little of Afghanistan aside from background radiation of the news of the last 20 years.
