City of the Dead by Brian Keene

City of The Dead by Brian Keene calls itself a zombie novel, but in reality it is a novel about demons. It is the second book in his series the first being The Rising. Yes, there are reanimated flesh, but they are the bodies of the dead inhabited by demons. This is a overtly religious tome, and makes no bones about it. I prefer my religion to be a tad more subtle. The only thing the characters did more than preaching, was swearing. I must say, this was not my favorite not-a-zombie book of all time.

I finally got to City of the Dead, Brian Keene's sequel to the relentless The Rising.

I had rated The Rising four stars, but I think this one will have to hit five.
Keene can move a story along with the best of them. There is no time for flowery prose, so buckle in and hold on tight.

City of the Dead picks up right where The Rising left off. Actually, it overlaps that ending. Like The Rising, the pacing is relentless, and you are burning through the novel like gangbusters.
And man, I love his zombie concept. These zombies are bad-ass and scary as hell.

Read The Rising, and then read this. And make some popcorn.

I adored the first book. I still call it the most terrifying horror novel I have ever read. I wish the author had not written this book. It is mediocre, and a disappointing follow up to perhaps the best zombie novel ever written. This one needed a good editor and a better understanding of how people, especially children, behave in a crises situation.

I rarely reread books, be it audio or print, but Keene's Dead books are a delightful rare exception! This is the sequel to [b:The Rising|216213|The Rising|Brian Keene|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1402345248s/216213.jpg|209323], and literally picks up where it left off! This is a book that is hard to put down. It starts with a bang and the action never stops for more than a page or two at a time! Join Jim and the gang as they venture into Manhattan and take part in a final showdown with the zombies... but will that be the end of the demons from The Void? Got to read to see!

Honestly, this was the best zombie book I’ve ever read! Superior to The Rising in every way. Brian Keene delivers a brutal, intense, and nasty story that is not for the faint hearted. The last fifty pages or so were an absolute blast of no holds barred, bloody mayhem, culminating in a perfect conclusion.

The only reason I read this book was because the first one ended on a very big cliff-hanger and I was just invested enough in the plot to find out what happened to the characters despite the poor writing and dialogue that literally made me cringe at times.

But this book, a sequel to The Rising which wasn't that great to begin with, was even worse. While I thought the gore and violence was fine in the first one, this book just went overboard with it. Certain scenes seemed gross just for the shock of it.

The dialogue didn't get any better and towards the end it was just dragging on so slowly that I didn't even end up finishing the book. I read about the ending elsewhere and am certainly glad I didn't waste more of my time on it.

Another great action packed read from Brian Keene. I like the way the zombies in this story aren't dumb slow creatures but intelligent demons. Nice change and I love his so called happy endings.

As I started this book, I really thought I was going to enjoy it. But, I have to say, the end left something to be desired.

The zombies in this book were sentient, so that was different. The gore and sexual content was quite graphic.
