For some reason I wasn't expecting great things from this book and I've been putting off reading it for a few days now, but I've just binge-read the whole thing and actually really enjoyed it, even if it is a bit slow and explain-y at the start.

This book was quite a bit of a shock. First of all, the prince was a womanizing jerk. And he was famous for it!!! Second, there were scenes that would have been rated R. I was EXTREMELY stunned by those, since I thought this was YA. Next time I will read more reviews before just reading a book.
It really much of a fairytale, more of a story between two girls, and them wanting to marry the jerk of a prince...and doing pretty much anything to get that.
Yeah...not what I want to fill my head with.

An entertaining read - the first half of the book was really enjoyable and told well, but the second half was rushed and it seems to me that the author didn't know how to end the story.

Alas, I think my opinion of this book is in part a casualty of my interest in YA fairy tale retellings dipping, as I seem to be liking adult retellings better these days, but, aside from that, I just didn't like this all that much.

It really suffers from relationships not really being built up very well. The relationships between the prince and the mermaid, the prince and the princess, and the mermaid and the princess just seem to happen just like that. Also, I thought there was great potential for a same sex relationship here, but this book was published in 2001, so before same sex relationships were really a thing in teen literature, sadly.

Another thing I didn't really like was the writing. There were a lot of sentence fragments, and those really bug me.

I do think it did do quite well with sticking to the mermaid's desire for a soul, as in the original Andersen story, but, other than that, and the friendship between the mermaid and the princess, this wasn't really for me.

This romantic retelling includes the perspective of the (human) princess Margrethe who sees the (mermaid) princess Lenia rescue the prince they both later fall in love with. A few liberties are taken to expand on the original story and the ending isn’t quite as tragic (unfortunately - that's what draws me to the story), but many details remain. Narration alternates between the two princesses as the reader learns their motivations for falling in love.

At first I thought this book would be silly. I read it because I had bought it long ago. I rolled my eyes at the thought of two women (a princess and a mermaid) fighting over a prince who is not worth much as a person. But I got totally wrapped up in the book. I enjoyed this interpretation of The Little Mermaid and liked how it ended, though it did end a bit abruptly. I may read more from this author.

I must be girlier than I thought. This story captivated me. It really spoke to the creative, imaginative, romantic heart in me. So if you like fantasy, fairytales, and letting your inner-child out to dream of far away places and beautiful worlds where anything is possible... Give it a try.

I really enjoyed this book much more than I originally anticipated. Not a bad filler even if it isn't my usual reading style.

I was captivated by this book. The alternating first-person perspectives drew me in and had me unsure of who to root for. I loved the new take on this classic and the writing was fresh and suspenseful. However, the prince turned out to be kind of a jerk and the ending was a complete cop-out. I think the story shouldn't have shied away from bloodshed at the end. One of them won and the other lost, they should have paid the ultimate price. It was a little too "And they all lived happily ever after" for me.

Pretty sure both girls should have gone off and done their own thing. Nothing special about this prince. Magical pregnancy that takes 1/3 of the time a normal pregnancy does just because the author needed to smoosh it into the plot is always fun though (not).
