In The Beautiful and the Damned, Siddhartha Deb undertakes an amazing project, interviewing a wide range of people from different ethnic groups, wealth levels, religions, and castes. Deb's reporting is stunningly thorough and there is almost no one he will not talk to (or try to talk to). He is also refreshingly honest about his impressions and his biases. I can't wait to read more from him.

A very thought provoking book on the rapid changes taking place in India and the very human cost they are having. Didn't leave you with much sense of hope for the future of the land and its people. Seems very destructive, alienating and unsustainable.

Intriguing and surreal, it is almost painful reading. Makes one realize exactly how much we take for granted in the West.
