The tone and style of this book are very much in line with the previous two in the trilogy (and, indeed, this is definitely not a standalone book and requires knowledge of those). I think its intricacy would be rewarding if it gains your affection and attention, but I never warmed to the characters or the series' quirks and was very aware that there were links being drawn between books and incidents that I hadn't been paying enough attention to for real appreciation.

Aside from the ongoing cruelty of trapping people and creatures in malformed human-animal combinations, a 'torturer' is briefly introduced in this volume whose MO is flaying his victims alive. Thankfully, only one character falls fully victim, and discussion of his fate is brief, whilst another escapes and survives again with mercifully brief descripton of his suffering.
