The plot idea of this was so different to anything I’ve read before and not at all what i expected. I loved that we got to see the flaws of both main characters and how unforgiving Gabriel was in his pursuit of Helene.

I tried this book on a whim and was NOT disappointed. It’s an interesting read for sure!

I would call it a dystopian society in a paranormal context. Vampires basically rule the world but are unknown to humans. They go through 1000 hours of day and 1000 hours of night. In day, people live their lives and are happy. At night, they lock themselves inside because at night is when all the bad people come out.

Helene is out just before night hits getting meds for her sister. On her way home she’s taken captive and brought to a mysterious person’s house. He has his guard beat her, wanting her to break down. But she doesn’t and with all the stuff in life, she welcomes the possibility of death, so he stops the beatings and keeps her for himself. She learns he’s a vampire king and the type of place he runs for his people. He compels humans to work for him during the night as sex and food banks. But Helene is taken just for him. There’s a fair amount of sex and erotica, but much of it is on the classy side of erotica and not the gross side. Given it’s a vampire story..you never know.

It’s a weird world we’re brought into but I quite enjoyed it. What I didn’t enjoy was Helene, in all honesty. I found her annoying. Gabriel I did enjoy though and I’m sure that seems backwards. I found him pretty compelling overall. It’s a unique read and a unique world the author created and I would be interested in trying more out by her.

This author is a little hit or miss for me. This one is strange--it starts out reading like dystopian scifi but is really paranormal. Super creative world building, but I had difficulty caring about the heroine.

Let's start with two book phrases that stayed in my mind all through the book:

"You may not know it yet, my defiant one, but you are mine.... at least for a time. When you understand that, you will kneel at my feet and thank me for sparing you the fate you might have been subject to"
"He wanted me to see the truth for myself. But seeing it didn't make it much easier to swallow."

This is another great book from my top favorite author, it's a paranormal book....so if you like vampires you will definitely love this book!! The world Miss Thomas created is not that hard to believe...imagine having 1000 hours of night before you're able to get days again...imaging hiding in you secured home so that you're able to survive those 1000 hours!!

The story is about Helene who only has a sister (Simone) and risk herself by leaving the house near night to get her sister medications (since she needs those medications to survive)....well while coming back from the pharmacy she gets abducted!! She soon finds herself in this nice big place and meet Gabriel (who she discover later on that he's a vampire)!! I am not saying more....it's a definite read!

The only negative thing about this book is that the main character Helene was getting on my nerve...she's very tired of her life only seeking death and at moment it gets very irritating, but as the story progress so does she and you begin to see a new Helene (thank god :))

This is not a book with an HEA ending....that is why I love this author!! The ending are never HEA but they are not bad ending neither....there are just ending and you are left to imaging the rest of the characters life!!

There is a bit of explicit, hot, raw sex scene but the book is not all about sexual acts...but when you have a sex scene oh my are they hot :)-Oh and of course it's a sub/dom story (now where can I find a Gabriel)

I give this book a 5 stars and can't wait for her new book!

If you are reading Kitty Thomas you're probably looking for a good story rather than good story telling. At least, that's what I go for when I pick up a novel by Kitty Thomas. I feel that she has all these great ideas and characters and then just never fleshes them out enough. That's fine though because I know what I'm getting in to when I start the book! Sometimes all I want is a quick story to read through!

Dark Night of the Soul definitely falls in to that category. I loved the concept of this book. The world that Thomas thought up was amazing, but just not fleshed out enough. Even for a Thomas novel. Due to the dystopian content I really wanted more detail of what their world was like and how they survived. There was a lot glossed over in this story with lots of jumps in time which I found very frustrating. Lots of details were lacking, even details for what the characters looked like.

I also found the ending unsatisfying. Although Thomas typically leaves us wanting more this seemed a bit extreme. I do hope she plans to write a sequel but I'm not crossing my fingers.

This story still gets high marks from me because I loved the concept of it and I knew going in that there were going to be lots of things that I wished had been written in more detail.

So this was an unexpected reading experience. This affected me on an emotionally visceral level.

I'm torn from wanting more and being content with the ending we were given. Because on the surface this is just a dark survival romance. Helene must do everything she can to see daylight again. But Kitty takes it a bit deeper than that. She tears in to us in a more emotional than psychological level that I was unprepared for. It's kind of beautiful.

Triggers: feelings of utter despair and hopelessness. If you're feeling fragile, maybe skip this for a bit.

This is a completely new take on dystopian vampire erotica. In this world that Kitty Thomas has built, the day last 1000 hours and the night last 1000 hours. Helene spends her days working and stockpiling supplies so that when night comes, her and her sister can hide in the safety of their home. That is until her sister figures out that she counted wrong and doesn't have enough meds to make it all the way through the night. Helene being the provider that she is, decides she can make it to the pharmacy and back in time. However, she is very wrong.

It is very early that we learn that the laws of this land are completely different from what we are used to in today's society. During the day, anytype of civil disobedience is not tolerated. However, during the evening, anything is fair game. Helene get kidnapped and taken to a mansion on the outskirts of town. Gabriel, who is head of the household and of the town, is intrigued by this woman and her will to protect her sister, even though she really has no will to live herself.

Gabriel offers to ensure that Helene's sister will get her meds, if Helene will just spend the entire night with him. He is convinced that he can make her feel again. He takes her to a dungeon where he beats her to make her cry, the first time since her parents died. He makes love to her and just overall makes her feel again.

Things really take a turn when Gabriel is forced to go to another city, and takes Helene with him, to stomp out a rebellion of humans trying to wipe out the vampires. Helene sees that maybe here town wasn't so bad after all. Each city is run completely at the whims of the head vampire.

Kitty Thomas has a great knack for writing deeply psychological stories. While I would never want to be one of the heroines in any of this author's books, I do love the emotion that she pours into the characters. While yes, there are sex scenes, they are not overly detailed or gratuitous like some erotica novels. There is more story than sex to this book.

Kitty Thomas leaves me with my mind blown after each and every read. I highly recommend this book to people who are willing to try something darker, but well written and wonderful characters. This story is written as a stand alone.

Oh my shit balls, I love this. Kinda fucked, but I love this. I don’t know why for sure but I know I do.

The mind of Kitty Thomas is just... it’s a very fascinating thing, I’ve learned.

And I know how KT ends their books... the endings are just the most painful.

I enjoyed parts of this book, however, I hate a completely broken character and that's what it seems Helene became. Granted, she did fight back a bit, but ultimately she gave in.
