I'm writing a review a year or so after reading the book, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters are pretty interesting and likable, though the main character's actions are sometimes questionable. I can't believe there are scholars who have the audacity to call Anne the "lesser Brontë." They must not have read her writing.

Reading this a second time is no less impactful than reading it the first time.

A novel ahead of its time the "tenant" is an independent woman in the early 19th Century, a situation too shocking even for the author's own sister Charlotte, who thought the choice of subject was a mistake.

I read this ahead of a session at the Bradford Literature Festival on coercive control - it's an significant perceptive, brave novel from a young woman in 1848, using letters and diaries to get first person view points.
