This felt long, and the time it took me to finish reflects that. It’s a good book, beautifully written, but could have been much shorter.

I don’t feel particularly satisfied with the ‘answers’ and lack thereof in some cases, but that doesn’t bother me too much - not everything needs to be tied up nearly with a bow.

The characters are okay, I can’t say that I felt any strong feelings for any of them.

Glad I read it, but not one that I would ever read again. Not sure that I’d recommend either.

Okay. It took me a couple of times to read the first few paragraphs to esrablish the setting.
I almost fell asleep right after that when there is a whole spiel about how the MC had ended up in his current job.
Right now, I finally reached the part of the inciting incident (sorry, writer talk.). Hopefully it'll pick up.

Update (June 3, 2016)
Finally finished. Phew.
It took a while to read this because some parts rend to drag on, especially when Mikami is in deep thought. Yet, I couldn't put it down because I wanted to know if the 14-year case of kdnap/murder of a little girl will be solved before its statue of limitation.
The ending, though... I don't know. I feel like there could be a part two since not all ends are tied neatly.

Rendered into English, I suspect a great deal of significance and poetry is lost for readers outside Japan. What remains is a gripping detective story full of complex emotion and spacious atmosphere.
