i've put off reading this book for a long time and i regret it because WOW i really like this book. it's definitely a lighthearted summer romance for music lovers that also sheds light on real societal issues. honestly, i love that the main couple is an interracial one, and that the book doesn't centralise its plot on this - in a way, it does normalise it and not treating it like a rarity!! and i like it (idk if i explained this right). it just shows progressiveness! aside from that, i love how the book isn't focused on the romance aspect, rather it focuses on the main character - ruby.

i really like ruby chertok. throughout the book, i supported her decisions and her ideas, and i sympathised with her too. i love how the book showed her journey of discovering her self-worth and identity, and how oscar contributed to this rollercoaster. that was another thing! i also loved how oscar and ruby's romance wasn't all sunshine and rainbows, and that their relationship also negatively affected one another at first. to me, it just made the love story even more dynamic and real.

i'm just going to count this as a spoiler but there's this quote near the end of the book. "i'm happy when i'm with him. but he doesn't make me better. i make me better. and . . . he makes me feel like it's possible." (page 359) I LOVED THIS SM!! your life doesn't revolve around your other person; they show you what a better life could be :)

disclaimer: this book solely focuses on classical music, which was a genre i'm not familiar with, so at times, i did feel confused and lost. i enjoyed the book nonetheless!!
