I get emails with Free and Discounted E-Books. Sometimes the books I get are disappointments. This one, was a pleasant surprise. It's an entertaining read. Definitely worth the .99 I spent on it. I will for sure be reading more from this author.

This set up for the book was great. We have an unlikeable victim with so many options for who could have done them in. We also have a small town where gossip runs rampant and secrets are many. But I never felt like there was a real sense of urgency. Each time we learned something new it was immediately explained, and each time a new possible path would crop up it would be eliminated almost immediately.

Even when our main character is doing something that could ultimately implicate her as the killer, its never really addressed. I did really like the twist for who it was, but the very end left me wanting a lot more closure.

I really enjoyed this book and the characters. I thought Kendra was funny and extremely interesting and that the plot was well written and well paced.

The only thing I didn't care for was Kendra dating someone that may or may not have murdered someone (never get involved with a suspect!!!) but otherwise I really enjoyed it. I can't wait to see what is next in her investigations.

Kendra Clayton has no problem waiting for Mr. Right. Her friend and co-worker Bernie, on the other hand, is willing to put up with just about anything in her relationships to avoid being alone. When Bernie finally decides to kick her freeloading boyfriend, Jordan, to the side, Kendra is over the moon. Until that is, Bernie calls to tell her that Jordan is dead.

After their work celebration, Kendra was ready to unwind with a bottle of wine and maybe some TV. Bernie, however, is off to confront Jordan. But when she gets to her rental house, she discovers his dead body, and to make matters worse, she calls Kendra before calling the police. After a series of police interviews and bad decisions, Kendra and Bernie look like prime suspects. So Kendra takes the investigation into her own hands.

But the deeper she digs, the more suspects she finds, the more questions everyone has, and the more danger Kendra finds herself in.

Angela Harris takes readers on a truly wild ride with an amazing all black cast of characters.

I love a good amateur sleuth novel. Watching the protagonist stumble through their first few investigations and learn as they go is fun. But Kendra never seems to doggone learn. She consistently makes dumb choice after dumb choice after dumb choice, and honestly, I don’t know how she even put the pieces of the crime together.

Then, as a reader, I don’t mind a few probing, investigative questions popping up in the protagonist’s internal monologues as the investigation goes along. (What does this note mean? Could she be the killer because of this new found evidence?) But there are huge chunks of questions that appear frequently as the story goes on. The large paragraphs of question after question don’t leave a lot of space for the reader to draw their own conclusions or think for themselves as new tidbits of information arrive. Part of the fun of mysteries is trying to solve the crime yourself, and that fun is nonexistent with all of the questions.

This was a fast-paced murder mystery about a woman named Kendra who wants to solve the murder of her best friend's boyfriend. She does so by completely her own investigation of the murder case and gets into a lot of crap along the way.

While I thought this novel had a lot of personality, Kendra was super nosey and got herself into some pretty questionable situations. I felt like she read more as a teen or young adult rather than an almost 30 year old, but I did enjoy her sarcasm and wit.
