I don’t even know how to process the ways this book made me feel. I kept hearing two songs in my mind as I read this, Hell is a Teenage Girl by Nessa Barrett and Labor by Paris Paloma. Also no f*cking way this is a YA book. Blurb is misleading and this book NEEDS trigger warnings.

This book was really good but in a way that made me wish I hadn’t read it. Georgia is a queer teenager discovering for the first time how to wield her sexuality to get what she wants from men. The reader gets to look on in abject horror as Georgia walks right into the gaping mouth of a trap set just for her before she realizes the kind of power she has over men isn’t empowering at all. Massive trigger warnings, especially for sexual assault.

Courtney Summers knows how to write a page-turner. Even though I wanted to throttle Georgia many times, I could also see how she came to believe the different things she believed, based on society and stubbornness. Aspera sounds like it could be a real place, and I can see how it would be both alluring and something you would urge people to stay away from. I think it will stay with me a while.
