This Is the Noise That Keeps Me Awake by Garbage

I’m a lifelong Garbage fan (though I’ve never been to a concert — too shy). But I have all the albums and b-sides. Pretty influential on my development as a person. First heard them in 1996–a golden year for things in my life that I never got sick of.

But really, only a Garbage fan is going to want this book. They aren’t terribly controversial or dramatic. They’re three guys from Wisconsin and one girl making music. What’s more surprising is how well they get along. No disappearances, no sleeping with band members, no drug binges (just alcohol). I never knew how isolated Shirley Manson felt in the beginning recordings living in a hotel all by herself. It certainly doesn’t come through on the track. And it traces the development of each album, how they’re all so different from each other, and why.

So the question is, should a Garbage fan pick up this book? The answer’s yes. It’s full of beautiful images, including artifacts from the road, and cocktail recipes, stories, interviews, and general history. They say it’s a coffee table book, but I disagree–that diminishes the work. Besides, you shouldn’t keep this on a coffee table where it can get spilled on. Put it on a shelf to be admired.

Of my other essential 90s bands, only No Doubt could garner such treatment.

"The trick is to keep breathing." Garbage has done that, and pushed so many limits in the music industry. I took my time with this book, re-reading sections and enjoying the anecdotes and photos from their long history. Shirley Manson is one of the strongest, coolest women out there. I hope Garbage continues to make music for years.

What have liked to know more about the lyrics in songs such as heaven is wide, supervixen and medication.

Not enough was written about the strange little birds. Nevertheless still a great tabletop memoir. I'm surprise I managed to read it in bed.

This a must read for any Garbage Fan. It's gorgeous coffee table book that recounts the history of the band in their own words complete with pictures and cocktail recipes.

I missed out on Garbage at their peak because of my age, but I stumbled onto their music as a teenager during the Bleed Like Me era and I was hooked. I began combing through their back catalog and embedded every album and b-side into my soul and have never let go.

Although Garbage is my favorite band, I can see how this wouldn't be an enjoyable read for anyone that isn't a fan, unless they just really want a few new drink recipes for their repertoire.
