This was awesome! His mouth and attitude was just hilarious at times. some parts were cringe-worthy because of secondhand embarrassment, but it was mostly alright at the end.

This book started out with an interesting premise but unfortunately failed to deliver. It features two of my favorite tropes: pretend marriage, and rich girl/poor guy, both of which aren’t as common in romances as I’d like! It opens with a great scene involving sailors and a press-gang, but sadly was less than compelling after that. The hero frequently comes across as rude and difficult, rather than just playful or likably cocky as I think was intended, and the heroine is just sort of... there. There was no connection or attraction between them, or even any interaction or thinking about each other for quite a while, so when they do get romantic it feels very out-of-the-blue. This would bother me with any love story, but especially with one that‘s so taboo for the time period - we need to see the yearning between them that prompts them to overcome the forbidden nature of it (which also seemed downplayed, by the way. The heroine is a countess and the hero is a literal servant but it’s treated as only mildly unusual rather than extremely shocking, as it would be, which not only is vastly historically inaccurate but defeats the whole purpose of using this kind of plot!)
