Nothing really happens here and the characters are a bit one dimensional. A lot of stuff wouldn’t fly by modern day standards.

I absolutely loved the characters and their friendship. The audiobook, read by the author, is fantastic.

Just couldn't get into it. Plus some crude content

It felt like I was slogging through it. There wasn't anything about the characters or the story telling format that made me want to push through to see if it got better. I guess I'm tired of the kind of storytelling that does info dumps of character history before the book resumes the present story at hand. There is a certain level of execution if that technique needed to keep my attention, but Waiting To Exhale didn't have that.
In this case, for me, the movie was far better than the book.

Maaaaan. I was right, I set myself up for disappointment, because I liked the movie so much.
If I hadn't seen the movie, I think I would've liked this book a whole hell of a lot better. It takes the women in the book a lot longer to show how strong they really are than it does in the movie. That's one of my favorite things about the movie, that despite how weak they act in regards to the stupid men who hurt them, they're still ready and willing to fight back.
In the book, it gets really tiresome. I know it's very accurate to real life women and our stupidity, but my favorite part, which is the car burning, is so watered down and weak.
I think really I would've liked this if I hadn't seen the movie first. Sigh.
