This takes place in the same universe as another Holt book “Donut” but for some reason doesn’t seem to be marketed as a sort of sequel. It probably can be read without having read the other books but it’s going to have a few brain scratching wtf moments.

There are some great lines and interesting themes, some fun satire and poking a bit of fun at the precious precious Tolkien books. good luck if you need a plumber.

Mostly this ends up being an ok read.

More like 3.5.
Like all Tom Holt's book, this one is very enjoyable, although it's far from my favorite.
I found the ending rushed and muddled - as if Holt was tired of the doughnut universe storyline.

A clever parody of human nature both good and bad while at the same time a tightly woven plot that works. Not flawless by any means and the ending feels rushed, but the highs of the book are as good as anything Terry Pratchett has produced which everyone knows is the scale against which all comic fantasy is measured.

A very clever, well written book that felt like it had cohesive and varied characters.

However, I'm not sure I'm the target audience for this book. At times, it felt a bit flat whilst trying to make what I'm sure was a very clever joke or reference I maybe missed. I didn't really enjoy the Lord of the Rings books (love the movies) so I'm not sure if I missed out on some layers to the book because of that.

Overall, pretty middlin' for me.

This was a lot of fun.

I understand why the memory-less man was there (
Spoilerhe's the protagonist of the book series
) but could have done without him. Would have preferred more time with Mordak.

Also I got confused between the Lushingtons and the Barringtons. Though the plot was less confusing than a usual YouSpace novel, so it was just a different state of confusion to the one I was expecting.

I loved all the skewering of archetypes, irreverent treatment of the source matter, and poking fun at the idiocy of the human race. Good times.

I think I missed a lot of the humor -

I had some pretty high expectations going into this just based off other reviews, and while I did find some of the dialogue to be witty and funny, I was mostly just bored throughout this.
