This is such a 3.5 book I'm loathe to give it 4 but I'm too much of a math fundamentalist to consider rounding down.

Listened to on audiobook, was engaging, characters were big and broad and you could kind of see where things were going but I was entertained on the journey. The narrator absolutely nailing all the varieties of British accents definitely helped.

I've read a few of Elton's books now and while they are ok he really isn't that funny as an author. I can take or leave him.

Ben Elton is never for the faint-hearted. As usual, I was hooked from the first page. The ideas he explores in the book are pretty mind-blowing, and the execution is just way cool. I love how his books really make me think. 'Chart Throb' stays with me to this day, and influences how I perceive all talent shows. The story of rocker Tommy and crack-addicted pro Jessie will be the part that sticks with me from this one. Bravo Mr Elton.

It was interesting reading this and then seeing Season 3 of The Wire, in which the police kind of "legalize" drugs. I don't know, this book didn't really make me think drugs ought to be legalized, but Elton always does a good job of weaving a lot of characters' stories together, like a grocery-store Dickens. A lot of the plot is told through Alcoholics Anonymous testimony, which I thought was creative.
