A valuable little book. Good to keep at arm's lenght to explain what depression feels like. Because who could describe it better than a writer? Obviously look out for Content Warnings (separate list)

CWs: depression, suicide, substance abuse

In a ten-chapter read, Styron summarizes when he realized he was spiraling into a suicidal depression by comparing his knowledge of depression to his own symptoms. By discussing the suicide of those he knew and his bias against the word “depression”, he explains his rapid descent into suicidality and the possible causes, while also explaining his own recovery process: therapy, psychopharmacology, and hospitalization. This quick, albeit not easy, read is perfect for those wanting to dip their toes into psychiatric memoirs.
