Lost Stars is my favorite Star Wars novel and it was a lot of fun revisiting that story in this form. The art is great and I had a lot of the same emotions I had while reading the novel. I do think that this adaptation lost a lot of character depth that was present in the novel (particularly Ciena) which prevented me from rating these higher.

I really didn’t read the summary going in so I was pleasantly surprised to find this is a story about two characters during the original Star Wars trilogy.

This first volume was really good! I like the set up and I’m excited to read the other two.

Edit: finished the series. It was good!! It’s complicated and conflicted and shows how differently people deal with trauma. I hope there’s more though.

I have not read the book this was adapted from.

The Lost Stars manga has been lying on my to-read pile for a while since I wanted to wait till I collected all three volumes. Though I have been taking the occasional peak inside.

I like how the story starts. Pretty directly, this is Thane, he's with the rebellion, he was part of the empire and has a complicated past with it. On the other side, we have Cienna, she's the complicated past.
It was depicted pretty dramatically and with great panel design which usually I'd enjoy immensely but like...I was already aware of all that since it's in the description of the book. Nonetheless, I still like how it was depicted.

I really appreciate the way Thane's disillusionment with the Empire is depicted. He lost his belief in the Empire pretty early on but continued since it was the path that would bring him closest to his actual dream of being a pilot and more importantly the lack of motivation to change something. Yes, the Empire and the Academy aren't great but it is what is. It's what he knows so he keeps moving forward. It's probably how many people in-universe and in our world feel like. Just being a cog in the machine.

The end scene which completely changed Thane's mind was also beautifully depicted, truly being able to depict the horrors the Empire was going to rain down upon the galaxy. A fantastic choice to just for a moment switch from the protagonist's perspective and create a deep impression leaving a double-spread panel.

Art wise this work leaves little to complain about. The lines are clean and sharp, the characters are distinguishable from each other, classic Star Wars machinery like the X-wings or AT-ATs are full of detail and the black ink style of mangas does Darth Vader all the favours. Only thing is, that after reading the manga adaptation of Leia, Princess of Alderaan the faces leave a bit to wish for. Since there is a depiction of actually existing humans like Princess Leia, the style of Lost Stars makes the look a bit uncanny, something Princess of Alderaan was able to handle better.

The dialogue is very predictable and the situations feel shoe-horned into the larger star wars narrative we know. It got a bit better toward the end.

Changes made to this series give it a new experience if you haven't read this book. It tells the tale of the novel but it isn't told linearly and starts in the middle and flashes back to events earlier in the novel which works to grab your attention faster in this first volume.
