This is not a Harry Bosch novel!!!!!!! I feel cheated and mislead! This book is narrated by Terry McCaleb who is the main character in Connelly's other crime series about Terry McCaleb. I do not like the character of Terry McCaleb, I thinks he's a jerk, and if I wanted to read about him I would read that series not Harry Bosch which is what I wanted and didn't get. For fans of the Bosch series feel free to skip this one, you won't miss much. Also I am very annoyed with Terry McCaleb's friend and work partner Buddy was so annoying I could kill the man myself. He is not a cop or any law enforcement but insists on sticking his nose where it doesn't belong and getting into all of Terry McCaleb's old files when he has no right to and eves dropping and asking questions about the current case which Terry has told him not to on multiple occasions. At one point Terry even thinks Buddy's actions have compromised the case if they want to go to trial but instead of telling the acting officer on the case he keeps it to himself and keeps on. What he himself is doing is compromising the case and it would never hold up in court but the acting officer seems fine with that. Later Terry thinks Buddy may have told a reporter about the case, he is wrong but still it should make him stop and think. Why and how is Terry friends with this idiot. Harry has to come and tell Terry that he is being set up and goads him into actually looking into things that aren't just immediate and coincidental. Totally unbelievable stuff to start with. Any part's Harry Bosch is in he is either in court to which all the dialogue is very dry and there is no action or he is being questioned by Terry. The only action is Harry runs down a witness how is hiding and confronting Terry and that was suspenseful.

I love the Terry McCaleb series however, was not wild about the ending. I am playing catch up with the older Connelly books, as have read most of the new ones. Loved the character Terry, a retired FBI agent who starred in the bestseller "Blood Work," - he is asked by the LAPD to help them investigate a series of murders that have them baffled. They are the kind of ritualized killings McCaleb specialized in solving with the FBI, and he is reluctantly drawn from his peaceful new life back into the horror and excitement of tracking down a terrifying homicidal maniac. More horrifying still, the suspect who seems to fit the profile that McCaleb develops is someone he has known and worked with in the past: LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch (which also love)!

Outstanding. Probably the best of all Connelly's books that I've read.

I love Michael Connelly's books. This one features Harry Bosch... along with Terry McCaleb. I have not met him before; he appears in 2 others. I am certainly behind! In this one, McCaleb suspects Harry of murder as he investigates a cold case, while Harry is involved in testifying in a murder trial. All threads come together in a suspenseful finish. Finished and reviewed August 19, 2017.
Reread as I'm moving through the Bosch books in order...amazing that I did not remember this one at all, so the ending was still a surprise! Also, still good reading.

Despite this being the #7 book in the Bosch series, it’s more like McCaleb #2 featuring Harry Bosch. Unfortunately Terry McCaleb is the main character who gives the first person narrative of events, with shorter Bosch scenes every few chapters.

It’s kind of amazing to see the juxtaposition between the two perspectives in this book; you’d almost think two different authors wrote it. The Bosch scenes are well-written, containing the suspense and intrigue that hooked me on this character many books ago. The McCaleb narrative (which comprises most of the book) is miserable, as we have to suffer through the perspective of a whiny, impulsive, wildly unintelligent, conclusion-jumping, grammar-correcting imbecile. Terry has no hesitation in accusing Bosch of murder, despite the fact that Terry himself was framed in the previous book!! Unbelievable.

To top it off, I listened to the audiobook narrated by Richard Davidson (Dick Hill narrated the Bosch books up until this one) and his narration style is laughably bad. His Bosch voice sounds unintelligibly low and growly like Davy Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean, he mispronounces common words, and at one point a side character was introduced whose accent was described as from “Australian or New Zealand,” and the narrator promptly read the character’s lines in a posh British accent. Who approved this for publishing?!

I’m glad to see the next Bosch book does not involve McCaleb and hopefully Connelly doesn’t bring him back in the future.
