Oh my goodness !!! Cliffhanger ending ! Got to be a sequel to this one ! Linwood Barclay has become the king of suspense to me and again he delivers.
Broken Promise seems to meander on with several situations from the murder of a young mother and the once accused baby snatcher that ends up with her baby to the curious mystery of 23 dead squirrels and other strange occurrences around town. David an out of work reporter recently returned to his hometown is thrown into the middle and decides to figure out who is responsible while trying to prove his cousin innocent. Full of a variety of characters that I'm sure we haven't heard the end of. Just when it seems to be wrapping up but leaving you with questions still unanswered you turn to the last page.
Bravo Barclay, you got me ! Can't wait to hear more from Promise Valley.

First in a trilogy, it started a bit slow as the author sets the story line for the whole trilogy. It picks up though as you get to know the various characters and sense what is about to unfold. One mystery is wrapped up by the end of the book but there are plenty more to resolve over the next couple of books. Looking forward to seeing how this plays out.

It was very obvious what was going on pretty early on so there were no surprises and I felt like I kept waiting for the story to get going. And the reason the one person does what they do? So dumb. That was the only "surprise" and it was not good. There are also other things going on besides the main story which don't get resolved so you have to read the next book! I don't care enough to read on though.

This is a new series for me and OMG I listened to this in audio and I couldn't stop listening. I figured out a few of the twists ahead of time but still this was so good. As soon as I finished it I loaded up the next book in the series. I highly recommend this one.

This is my second book by Mr. Barclay and so far I’ve not been disappointed. He has a unique style of writing about normally people who get in extraordinary situations and actually makes you believe the unbelievable. I’m giving this a solid 4 because it was entertaining and I actually cared about what was happening with each of the characters. And though I figured out most of it about midway through I kept reading because it was just a fun escape! He also does a great job of giving each character a backstory without getting bogged down in minutia.

And don’t get upset when ALL of the mysteries aren’t solved at the end...it’s a trilogy so there will definitely be more follow up in books 2 and 3.

Looking for a quick weekend read? Try this one!

My true rating is 2.5 stars. I read this book because it is Waterloo Region's One Book One Community this year. At first, I was enjoying the main character and the setting, but by the time I was halfway through, I just wanted it to be over. This book would have been stronger if some of the extra perspectives were cut and if the author didn't use so many gimmicks, such as constantly taunting the reader with withheld information. That being said, the book is a quick and pretty well paced read. I think a lot of people will find this choice very readable and enjoyable.

I was excited that Linwood Barclay was starting a series that would be available close together. I had no doubt that it would be anything less than awesome. I had a hard time putting Broken Promise down and I look forward to the next book. I love Linwood Barclay! keep up the great work. :)
