It’s been a long time since I’ve loved a book so much. I don’t really have the words to describe just how heartwarming and magical this story is. William Joyce is incredible and wonderful and if the world were a William Joyce story, it would be a much better place.

Ich kann noch gar nicht richtig in Worte fassen, wie unglaublich ideenreich, phantasievoll und liebenswert die Erzählung um Ollie Glockenherz ist! Das folgt die Tage :)

I would put my personal enjoyment of this book at 3 stars, but then again, I'm not the target audience. This is a book written specifically to resonate with children, especially those with beloved plushies of their own. Makes for some epic read-alouds.

Usually I can find the magic and fun in any children’s book, but this one was hard to focus on and enjoy.

I’m sure kids love the way the characters have their own words for things (slobbering instead of kissing), but to me it just added to my annoyance with the book. A lot of it also just didn’t make sense to me, and I thought the ending was super rushed.

I did really like the illustrations and the moral of the story. I thought the backstory of Zozo was more interesting than the actual main characters’ storyline. But isn’t that typically the way?

I read this with my girls, and we all loved it. It is a fun book that is entertaining but also meaningful.

Gorgeous, sweet, heart-jerking, and a little scary. Like a less heart-shattering Velveteen Rabbit.

Ollie's Odyssey is a beautiful story in the tradition of The Velveteen Rabbit, told in William Joyce's typical sweet, inspiring style.  When Billy is born, the doctors are worried about his heart.  As they wait for more information from the doctors Billy's mother sews him a special toy--a cross between a teddy bear and a rabbit--using the jingle bell from her own favorite childhood toy as its heart.

The bear/rabbit is christened Ollie and becomes Billy's favorite toy.  Their adventures resemble those of Andy and Woody & Buzz Lightyear in Disney's Toy Story saga. Meanwhile, in the deserted carnival is Zozo the Clown King--the main figure in an old carnival game where children used to win toys that went home with them and became "favorites."  Zozo has never belonged to a child and although he began as a loving, generous toy, heartache has caused him to harden his heart, live in bitterness and make it his mission to destroy "favorite" toys.

From Ollie and Billy's joyous and innocent games, Zozo's hideout when his minions kidnap Ollie from a family wedding, a junkyard full of forgotten odds and ends to the ultimate rescue attempt where Billy and Ollie might each have to give the other up in order to save each other this is a classic tale of true friendship and the generous, everlasting qualities of love in each of our lives.

Both joyful and poignant in age-appropriate language and content, Ollie's Odyssey is a terrific read-aloud at home or in the classroom as well as a great independent reading choice for 2nd grade and up!

I fell in love with the book when I read the blurb. A favourite plushie on the A-venture of his life-time, a wonderful antagonist, quirky side-kicks, beautiful illustrations, and enchanting language make this book magical, even for adults. or at least those of us who remember sharing everything with our plushie.
