Devastating in every way, this book not only preceded what is now a common genre, it created it. Steinbeck, only in Brooklyn, without any of the hope that Steinbeck puts in his books. I was miserable while and immediately after reading it, but it is nonetheless an excellent book.

This book was different of anything I had ever read before. I wanted to read it since I've heard that Fitzpleasure was inspired by one of these short stories. As soon as I started it, I realized it was not going to be the quick read I was expecting. I had problems not only understanding the stories, but also the language: the author doesn't indicate when the dialogue stars or ends, and the written accent also confused me sometimes.

Part I: I was so confused about what actually happened in this one... 1/5
Part 2: This one was better because I empathized with the main character Georgette. However, I still don't get the ending. Please explain? 4/5
Part 3: ??????????????????? 1/5
Part 4: Finally, the story I actually wanted to read. Wasn't what I wanted and expected, but still enjoyed it. 4/5
Part 5: Had a hard time reading this, because I felt like it went too slowly. 3/5
Part 6: Great way to end the novel, feel like it captures the atmosphere of the book. 3/5

This one was kinda tedious after a while, but he has a unique original style. Not as great as some people seem to think it is.

This one has a special place in my heart. Last Exit to Brooklyn had to have been one of the first books to show sympathy towards any conceivable marginal outcast. Selby's style of writing is fresh and shocking. He was an inspiration to David Bowie, Lydia Lunch, and Henry Rollins. He was an even bigger inspiration to Lou Reed. Hearing the stories of these people who feel alienated from 1950s American society is really something else. Not only do I like this book, but it makes me feel like a writer.
