“But how you feel and understand love are two different things. Now, so many years down the road, I recognize that I was alone and adrift and that he was lonely in the way only a ladies man can be.”

“It matters that I didn’t grow up with my father. It’s kind of like having one leg that’s a half inch shorter than the other. You can walk, but there will be a dip.”

“I had forgotten the power of her voice, the way she scuffed you in order to buff you smooth.”

“The vast generosity of women is a mysterious tunnel, and nobody knows where it leads. The writing on the walls spells out trick questions, and as a man, you must know that you cannot reason your way out.”

The characters in this novel are extraordinarily well developed, with a realness that absolutely oozes from every chapter and painful letter written to each other. And for those who give it 4 or 5 stars, I can totally understand why. It does make one pause and reflect on love, marriage, race and our justice system. And yet, that very realness made this just a hard read for me. A bit too real for me to really love it. I didn’t feel compelled to keep picking up the book to watch again how Roy gets jilted by the system and his loved ones, and see Celestial rudderlessly stumble as she tries to get an identity. At least it ended peacefully, if not happily. I should know better by now: if I want a feel good book, never go with an Oprah pick.
