This entire volume was just one emotional gut punch after another. Definitely my favourite so far.

This is a different kind of volume. Ed asks to hear about what the war between the Amestrians and Ishbalan was like and this entire volume is a flashback. It starts when Mustang meets Riza and shows how Scar became the vengeful person he is. It also shows Winry's parents how they died.

There's obvious allegories for the war in the Middle East here. I'm glad the Ishbalans weren't demonized or represented as "equally" in the wrong. There's representation of the corrupt practices going on with the military, particularly how they were planning to get rid of Winry's parents because they didn't want to use resources to keep them safe. This series does a lot with characters trying to minimize harm. The Rockbells couldn't stop the war, but unlike other doctors like Dr. Marcoh, they didn't use their skills to cause harm. They stayed in a warzone to save innocent people.

Ed's whole thing is being a state alchemist for access to the art, but he doesn't want to kill and tries to minimize casualties wherever he goes. Also, I feel like pretty much no one would say this series uplifts military service. Several people Ed comes into contact with have negative thoughts of state alchemists and people who are "dogs" for the government.

The themes in this series are a little surprising and I'm enjoying it!
