Unfortunately the build-up in the two previous volumes of Animal Man were much better than the big fight itself. This seems to happen a lot when talented writers develop interesting, tense, creepy setups and then finish by relying on the artist(s) depicting an ultimate fight scene with everything BIGGER and MORE ACTION, littered with cliche superhero screams and face-downs.

On the one hand, I like that this volume gives a reason for the aggressive nature of the Gray in this storyline. I had tremendous problems with the whole premise in previous volumes. On the other hand, much of the story here is set in a world that is clearly going to be restored before the story finishes, and I have a problem with Reset Buttons. They're bad storytelling and should be avoided.

You can really tell when Scott Snyder gets involved. In that it gets more monologuy and repetitive.
