This book is informative regarding the Christmas customs on the author's island home off the west coast of Ireland and the experience of growing up on the now uninhabited island. It gives a good insight into what life was like for the islanders, including personal experiences from the author's childhood. It also includes photographs and an interesting section at the back providing 'colourful Irish phrases.' The translator did an excellent job translating from the original Irish too.

I was a little disappointed with this book in places. I don't think the detailed description of going to the toilet outdoors or the more graphic description of the killing of the pig was necessary to recount for readers.
