New American Best Friend is fiery, fiesty, feminist and fabulous. It’s a collection of poetry exploring American womanhood from girlhood to adulthood. It’s empowering, its celebratory, it subverts stereotypes. It made me rage at times but it also made me laugh and cheer. Loved reading it. Loved it even more when I listed to the poet read her words aloud (thanks to YouTube) while I read along. So many favourites but my thoughts keep returning to Alternate Universe in Which I am Unfazed by Men Who Do Not Love Me. Can’t wait to read more by Olivia Gatwood, especially her first novel due out later this year.

making the decision to read these poems while listening to taylor swift was truly not my brightest moment. really, i cried. i was kicking my feet. i was tightening my fist until my finger nails left marks on the palm of my hand. i bawled.

there are no words in my head that can perfectly summarize this better than this excerpt from one of the poems titled "ode to my bitch face":

one theory is that you were born like this
but i don’t believe it. you came out screaming
and alive and look at you now, look at how
you’ve learned to hide your teeth.

Olivia never fails to capture queer adolescence, “womanhood”, sexuality, poverty, sexual assault, etc, in such a beautiful way. This stays close 2 my heart forever . <3
